Thank you for your interest in Waggonway on Wheels inclusive cycling event. All bikes, trikes and adapted bikes are welcome.
Accessible cycling charities will be providing adapted bikes to anyone who wants to try one.
Cycling Without Age (https://cyclingwithoutage.org.uk/) will be offering rides following the route.
Other local cycling charities will be there providing information on what’s available in your local area.
- You will follow an out-and back route along Wylam Waggonway. The total return route is 6.3km but you can go as far you are able. Routes are all signed in YELLOW
- The route starts at Wylam Jubilee Field. There are two optional ways to access the Waggonway from the start point:
- Off-road route, leaving Jubilee Field towards Bumblebox bridge and then down a short but steep descent to the Waggonway. Turn right towards Newburn
- Level route, leaving Jubilee field towards Main Road Wylam. Cross the road, pass through Fox and Hounds beer garden, turn right down Falcon Terrace for 60 metres, turn right down track towards Waggonway, turn left toward Newburn.
- Ride as far as you are able up to gate at the Farm which is the 3km marker, return along same route for refreshments and entertainment at Jubilee field.
Prior to coming to the event, we would ask you to consider the following key points:
- Marshals will be there to welcome participants from 10am at the pavilion at the Jubilee Field, Main Road, Wylam, Wylam NE41 8DN.
- Registration opens at 10am and you may take part anytime between 10am- 1.30pm
- Please be aware that wearing of recognised cycling helmets is compulsory during this event.
- Under 18s should be supervised by a responsible adult at all times
- Please follow marshals’ instructions. Please remember that they are on course for your safety.
- Anyone endangering other participants or road users is not welcome at any of our events. Give way to pedestrians
- In case of emergency (should you witness an accident) you should initially contact the emergency services 999 or 112 and then get the attention of one of the marshals.
- If you are bringing your own adapted bicycle or tricycle, please ensure it is mechanically sound.
- Keep to the left along the Waggonway and when passing other participants. If you need to overtake, pass with care on the right.
- Toilets are available in the Jubilee Field where you start and finish your ride. There is one disabled toilet here.
- There are several village shops, cafes, and pubs en route where food and drink can be purchased, including the Fox and Hounds who are opposite the playing fields.
- There will also be the opportunity to buy an afternoon tea on Wylam Playing Fields.
Parking
For those who are driving to Wylam there is a free car park in the village (Wylam Car Park - Tyne Riverside Country Park), but this is often well used at weekends. Alternatively, please use considerate on-street parking elsewhere in the village. We are hoping that Wylam on Wheels will cause minimal disruption to residents and visitors to Wylam.
Litter
Please do not leave litter. This route goes through beautiful, unspoilt countryside. Please do not drop food wrappers, plastic bottles etc. We can’t clean up after you and local residents will not want us back if we leave litter.
